Longtime Political Strategist Declares for Howard County Council
Former Maryland Democratic Party Spokesman and current public safety professional, Arinze Ifekauche, filed to run in the June 2026 Democratic Primary for Howard County Council District 2. On May 1st, nearly 50 people attended his kickoff event at Sapwood Cellars Brewery. The 39-year-old political strategist has spent nearly two decades working in public policy and grassroots organizing on Capitol Hill, as well as State and Local government. Ifekauche says his campaign will focus on expanding and fortifying Howard County’s middle class. Visit www.voteforarinze.com/about to learn more about his candidacy. “It was hard to pay a mortgage and put two kids in daycare here in Columbia before the federal layoffs started. Now the markets are sliding and businesses are afraid to invest and hire,” Ifekauche said. “I want to increase our economic competitiveness locally, regionally, and nationally. And we can do that by letting private industry know that Howard County is home to one of the best places in America to raise a family and put your kids through school.”
Five Areas of Focus
A thriving local economy - through aggressive and strategic outreach to the private sector. Howard County offers great schools, safe neighborhoods, attractive office space and a strong tax base. Ifekauche will champion policies and efforts to transform Howard County into an economic engine in Maryland.
Affordable child care - Ifekauche will pursue and support policies that make it easier for dual income and single parent households to access quality childcare at a reasonable price.
Quality housing options - Housing is expensive– and affordably priced options for young families and older adults are few and far between. Ifekauche will create a “first time downsizer” program that will incentivize empty-nesters to move into newly built 50+ communities with down payment assistance and tax breaks and allow young families access to single family homes that were previously off the market.
Safe Neighborhoods - Ifekauche supports investments in youth engagement and family resources as a proactive deterrent to violence in our community.
Protecting school budgets - Capital Budgets reflect our long term commitment to the wellbeing of our most precious institutions. Ifekauche will protect all capital dollars for District 2 schools and support all collectively bargained salary and compensation agreements in our operating budgets.
Ifekauche has spent his entire career working to elect Democrats in Maryland and across the country. This includes partnering with Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee for Frontline congressional races in Alabama, Louisiana, and Ohio; the Get Out the Vote effort for Marriage Equality during the O’Malley Administration; electing Marilyn Mosby as the youngest chief prosecutor in America and authoring her “Freddie Gray Speech” in 2015; and supporting the Blueprint For Maryland’s Future during his time as Communications Director for the Maryland Democratic Party. He sees his varied experience in public service as an advantage for 2nd District residents.
“I’ve seen policy wonks that don’t know politics and politicians that don’t know policy. You have to have an understanding of both in order to truly drive change. I know how to listen, I know how to communicate, I know how to organize, and most importantly– I know how to compromise. This is the skillset I will put to use on behalf of my constituents.” Ifekauche said.
Ifekauche is a resident of Oakland Mills. He is married to his wife Delora (the pair are frequently listed as a Power Couple in Maryland Matters’ annual list) and together they have a young son. Ifekauche has two teenage daughters from a previous marriage. He holds a Masters Degree in Public Relations from Kent State University and a Bachelor's Degree in Public Relations from the University of Alabama. Ifekauche is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. where he is Chair of Columbia (MD) Alumni Chapter’s Kappa League youth mentorship program. He and his family attend Celebration Church in Columbia.
